Lawrence, Jacob

(1917-2000)

Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, he later lived and worked in New York. where he studied at the HARLEM ART WORKSHOP as well as the AMERICAN ARTISTS SCHOOL. He was involved with the WPA in New York and eventually became perhaps the most prominent African American artist of his generation. He excelled at painting and printmaking as he told the stories of the "Black experience".
