Born in Chicago, he later worked in New York and was referred to as "a poet of the rooftops". He later turned from realism to abstraction.

An important early work signed upper right. One of the artist's signature subjects (rooftops), this painting was awarded a prize at the inaugural exhibition for Pepsi Cola Paintings of the Year. It was illustrated on the cover of ART NEWS MAGAZINE, AUGUST, 1944. In the original frame.
