Soyer, Raphael (1899-1987)
Russian born artist who later worked and taught in New York city. Known for his compassionate social realist views of people, he was an outstanding painter and printmaker. One of four brothers (two others were also painters --Moses and Isaac). I spent an evening with Raphael Soyer and his wife Rebecca at the restaurant "Cafe des Artistes" in New York in the early 1980's. He was as compelling in person as his art would have you believe.
